 What is Glucosamine?

Glucosamine is an amino-sugar that your body naturally makes. It works as a building block for making plus repairing cartilage and assisting it to hold water. Keeping water is important for keeping your own joints nicely lubricated and allowing you to move as efficiently. When the cartilage in your joints is harsh and torn due to osteoarthritis, taking glucosamine might help restore it and lessen discomfort and stiffness. It works as a biological signal to change on the repair of these cells and to reduce inflammation as well as the dysfunction of cartilage. The production declines with age group, contributing to joint deterioration. The study suggests that supplementing a healthy diet along with glucosamine could help to ease achy joints and stiffness.

Glucosamine supplements are available in various forms of which the most well-known are glucosamine hydrochloride (HCl), glucosamine sulphate 2KCl (combined with a potassium chloride salt) and glucosamine sulphate NaCl (combined with a sodium chloride salt). Weight for weight, glucosamine HCl provides 40 percent more glucosamine than glucosamine sulphate. Some products are extracted from shellfish, while superior types are made from vegetable sources. Smaller molecules, such as N-acetyl-glucosamine are used in topical formulations designed to be applied to joints.

How much glucosamine should you take?
In most research on treating osteoarthritis, the typical dose was 500 milligrams of glucosamine sulfate, three times a day. Ask your doctor what he advises for you. Some experts recommend you take it with meals to avoid an upset stomach.

Benefits of Glucosamine

For Osteoarthritis:

A study has been conducted wherein it states that glucosamine appears to reduce pain and improve function in Osteoarthritis. A 2005 review of 20 glucosamine research discovered an improvement in joint pain, stiffness, and function using a certain brand of glucosamine supplements such as Rottapharm, marketed as Dona, Viartril, and Xicil.

The largest study to date, the 2006 Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT) looked at 1,600 people with knee osteoarthritis. The first phase found that a small part of patients with moderate-to-severe arthritis suffered significant pain relief from combined glucosamine and chondroitin. The 2008 phase found that glucosamine and chondroitin, together or alone, did not slow joint damage. And in the two-year-long 2010 phase, glucosamine and chondroitin were found as effective for knee Osteoarthritis as Celecoxib (Celebrex).

In a small 2012 study, an improvement in symptoms was observed with combined glucosamine and NSAIDs, and a lesser but still substantial improvement with glucosamine alone.

The study also suggests glucosamine might slow joint damage. A 2008 retrospective research of nearly 300 patients found that using glucosamine went through the half as many joint replacement surgeries as those on placebo.

Research suggested the possible reason why taking Glucosamine is associated with longevity. It appears to encourage the dysfunction of amino acids which cells can metabolize instead of carbohydrates. This may imitate the metabolic changes seen when following a low-carb diet, even when carbohydrates are eaten, to lessen insulin resistance and enhance glucose control.

For Athletes Performance

Numerous athletes overwork their important joints due to the high demands associated with training and competition. Whilst a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and proper hydration are usually paramount, natural products like glucosamine sulfate can perform a supportive role to maintain the structure of healthful cartilage. Supplemental glucosamine sulfate may result in reductions in joint pain and stiffness, and also increased joint performance.
