Finding the Right Boxing Glove for Your Needs

What’s the difference between using a 10, 14 or 16 ounce glove, sparring glove or one too big? Read on…

Pick the Right Size

  • While size and weight don’t always correlate, size generally means the ounces of the glove.
  • Common sizes range 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 ounces.
  • Bigger gloves have more padding for both hand protection and partner protection.
  • Heavier gloves also assist a boxer train for a quicker speed.
  • Sparring gloves are commonly 16 oz for full padding. Measuring the circumference of your wrist should be considered as well.
  • Picking the right size will become apparent when its a snug fit, it’s comfortable and your fingertips reach the top of the glove, and it doesn’t take to much effort to make a fist.

Pick the Right Glove Type

  • Bag gloves have more padding and protection: wrist support, knuckle protection and proper weight.
  • Sparring gloves protect both you and your sparring partner; meant to develop your skill and technique and not knock out your partner.
  • Hits don’t do much damage as they are usually the highest amount of padding at 16 oz.
  • The extra weight makes for a great training tool increasing shoulder strength as well increasing stamina.
  • All purpose training gloves are a boxer’s staple tool.
  • Made for a general purpose glove, hitting heavy bags, mitts, sparring and all in between.
  • Fighting gloves are just that…used for fight night.
  • Smaller padding and more compact than other gloves, its meant to hurt the opponent.

Before buying a pair of boxing gloves make sure to pick the right size, wear your wraps while trying on different sizes, buy for the flexibility that you need.
